Taurasi Terredora Dipaolo 2001
September 26, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | No Comments
100 % Aglianico from Campania, spends two years in new french oak barriques- dense and chewy with a nice tannic bite. Aglianico is fast becoming fashionable, and for good reason, Taurasi produces Aglianico with depth and intrigue. This wine has sure has great dark fruit, but then it has smoky earth and a herbaceaous minty menthol that makes this wine compelling- definitely a wine that benefits from a decanting-enjoy now or give it a couple years.
Scala Dei Prior Crianza 2001
September 26, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | No Comments
A bargain Priorat? We at The UnCorker were skeptical, but this is the real deal. Predomimantly Grenache, with a bit of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is still tightly wound, but with air it unfolds into an aromatic wine with real terroir. Dark chunky fruit, menthol, mint and wet stone leads into a rich chocolate finish. We were astonished by how inexpensive this gem was. You can still pick it up online for under $25. A perfect discovery for the fall.

September 5, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | No CommentsAnother steal from the 2006 Cotes du Rhones, this cuvee is two-thirds Grenache with the rest being mouvedre and syrah, all from old vines. Dense with black fruit, blackberry jam and mouthstaining power, this unfiltered gem will rekindle the love affair you used to have with low priced French wine. This one has everything you want from a Cotes du Rhone, rugged beauty and the smell of rocks, garrigue and brambly pines being warmed by the Mediterranean sun- Stock up-this will keep you warm all winter.
Andezon Cotes du Rhone 2006
September 5, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | 1 CommentThe Market is flooded with 2006 Cotes du Rhones, and if you know where to look, its a great thing for the budget minded shopper. For all of you drinking nothing but New World reds, its time to give the Old World another look. Throughout the Rhone Valley in 2006 vignerons produced plump rich Grenache and meaty smoky Syrah- Andezon is primarily the latter; it is a dense wine with spicy fruit, bacon fat, smoke and loads of herbes de provence. Great with grilled lamb or a spicy pasta- A serious value at $10
Simon Hackett Old Vine Grenache, McLaren Vale, Australia 2004
September 2, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | 1 Comment
Coming from the cooler McLaren Vale in South Australia, this Grenache comes from vines at least 30 years old, and shows great concentration of red fruit; strawberries, cherries, pomengrantes and loads of smoke- the kind of wine you can’t stop swirling and sniffing. On the palate this wine is medium weight, with a nice acidity and a good sappy finish. Try this alongside burgers or bbq. 14% Alcohol. - A great value at $14 Astor Wines
Mountain Road ‘Niagara Escarpment’ Pinot Noir, New York, USA 2004
September 1, 2008 | In WINE REVIEWS | No Comments
What a great little surprise this wine was! Like just about everybody, our experience of New York state Pinot Noir has been limited at best, and frankly we thought we liked it that way. Here is a wine to change hearts and minds. This pinot is a cloudy bright brick red with an expressive nose of wild strawberry, spice and mineral. Bright on the mid-palate with finely woven tannins, this wine does disappear quickly , prompting a friend to say ” there is no there there’ which may be the case, but still a wine that could take a bit of a chill and be terrific with that picnic. Maybe its my New York pride, but we’ll be keeping an eye on Mountain Road. $22 @ Vintage New York
